Dr. Julius Anang, M.D. ,PhD., F.R.C.P.(C)

Motor Symptoms - Complications & Medications

Dr. Anang attended medical school at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, with Postgraduate Studies in Internal Medicine conducted at Charité Berlin in Germany. He completed his Neurology residency at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. During his time at McGill University in Montreal, where he completed his Movement Disorders Fellowship Dr. Anang received a $100,000 Parkinson Canada Clinical Research Fellowship, conducting a study on caffeine for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. In 2017, Dr. Anang joined St. Boniface Clinic. In addition to treating patients with Parkinson’s disease, he takes part in many education events for Parkinson Canada and the community. Along with Dr. Ron Postuma and McGill University, Dr. Anang co-authored Parkinson’s Disease: An Introductory Guide, available in print and online through Parkinson Canada.

Gillian Barnes, M.A., RSLP, S-LP(C)

Speech and Swallowing Difficulties in Parkinson’s Disease

Gillian graduated from the University of New York, Plattsburgh with a Master of Arts degree in speechlanguage pathology in August 1989. Gillian began her career in Calgary, Alberta with Calgary Health Services working with school aged children. In 1990 she moved back to Winnipeg and began working at Children’s Hospital, Health Sciences Centre. In 1991, she transferred to the Rehabilitation Hospital, Health Sciences Centre working primarily with individuals with neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders. In 2007, she became the speech-language pathologist at the Movement Disorder Clinic, Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg. Gillian currently works with individuals with movement disorders, primarily Parkinson’s disease, Parkinsonism and Huntington’s disease, providing assessment and treatment of speech and swallowing. Gillian is an active volunteer at both the provincial and national level. She was the President of the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA) from 2005-2007. In 2009, Gillian became President Elect of the Canadian Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA), President from 2010-2012 and served as Past President 2012-2014. She continues to be involved with Speech and Audiology Canada, SAC(CASLPA) on several committees.
