Meet Alejandro, Your Online Fundraising Concierge

alejandro_web_concierge

We're proud to boast a strong online fundraising system that we continuously improve based on your feedback, but recognize that fundraising online (and in general) may produce some occasional questions. Moreover, while we share information on Parkinson SuperWalk and our event locations, you might have some questions as walk weekend approaches. In either case, or for any of your needs, we're here for you. Specifically, Alejandro Alas, our Online Fundraising Concierge, is here to help as part of a committed team working on Parkinson SuperWalk.

We've asked Alejandro a series of questions to help you get to know him, and encourage you to reach out directly at 800-565-3000 whenever you need some help with your fundraising. Click here to learn more about Alejandro, or read below for the most relevant questions as part of our Frequently Asked Questions.

What should people do if they're looking for help or information?

Call me! At 800-565-3000 ext. 3392, or send an email to superwalk@parkinson.ca, I'm by the phone 9-5 Eastern Time and monitor my email inbox regularly. If I miss your call, you can count on a call back.

What are the most common questions you receive?

I find the range of questions that come in interesting... some are very technical, while some are just looking for information, and others still want to know about the value of their donation. The most common questions are below. Just click on the question text to reveal a helpful answer, and remember I'm only a phone call away.

What impact does my donation make?

In short, a truly significant one. Parkinson SuperWalk makes up a big part of Parkinson Canada's overall annual fundraising, and is the only nationwide event in support of Canadians living with Parkinson's. Your gift has a direct impact on quality of life for Canadians living with Parkinson's through research, advocacy and support. Learn more here.

Where could I find more detailed information about a specific walk location?

We try to provide as much information as possible on each of our walk sites on their location details page. If your question isn't listed, please feel free to give me a call (800-565-3000 ext. 3392) and I'll do my best to find an answer for you!

What does being a SuperStar Walker mean?

SuperStar Walkers are fundraisers who go above and beyond! To be a part of this exclusive fundraising club, participants each raise more than $1,000. They're recognized on walk day with a commemorative hat and pin, and deserve to be acknowledged throughout the year for making a true impact on behalf of Canadians living with Parkinson's. Last year, more than 420 participants qualified as SuperStars. This year, we're hoping to grow the SuperStar club to 500 members - which would mean an extra $80,000! Learn more about SuperStar walkers and SuperStar Supreme ($2,500) walkers on our fundraiser recognition page.

If I registered last year, do I need to register again this year?

Our online fundraising system resets every year, and we need to know who to expect on walk weekend year-over-year, so yes. The good news is, if you've participated before the registration process is very straightforward, and your donors will be tracked for the new year's event. After choosing your walk location and walker type (individual, team captain or team member), be sure to choose the returning walker option and use your username and password to reactivate your account. If you don't remember one or the other, I'm happy to help!

Where can I sign up to volunteer for SuperWalk?

Our volunteer needs vary by community, and so does the process for getting involved. You can learn more about our volunteer roles online, but the easiest way to get involved is to let us know you're interested. Send an email to superwalk@parkinson.ca or call me, and we'll share your info with the appropriate local walk contact.

When do I get my SuperWalk donation receipt?

If you donated online, you should receive your tax receipt right away by email. Please check your donation confirmation message for an attachment. Cash and cheque receipts take a little while longer to process. Before the walk, expect to recieve a receipt within 2-4 weeks of your donation. If your donation was submitted on walk weekend, it is tracked with all the pledge forms from across Canada. We try to issue receipts as quick as possible, but because of the high volume it sometimes takes into the New Year. If I can help tracking down a missing receipt for either an online or cash or cheque gift, please let me know.

How do I reset my password?

You can reset your password by providing your username and email address on this page. Or, you can phone or email me and I'll be happy to help.

Are pets allowed?

Most of the time, yes. But, the rules at some of our venues differ. It's a good idea to check your location details page or connect with us before the walk to make sure.

How much do I need to raise to get a T-Shirt and/or is there a registration fee?

There is no registration fee for Parkinson SuperWalk. We succeed because our committed participants ask their friends, family and colleagues for support. Because t-shirts and other event day items carry a cost, we encourage a $50 fundraising minimum.

How and where do I submit my cash and other SuperWalk donations?

Walkers can bring cash and cheques with them, along with a pledge form containing complete donor information, to their local walk on walk weekend. We encourage you to bring one cheque to cover all cash gifts. If you'd like to honour your pledges before the walk - or if you're a donor looking to support a walker - you can mail a pledge form and a cheque to my attention at: Parkinson Canada, 316-4211 Yonge St., Toronto, ON, M5V 2V1

When is the last date to make SuperWalk donations?

You can donate to Parkinson SuperWalk until December 31. The website does close for a short period at year end, re-opening on the following year's launch date. The deadline for calculation of top fundraisers, and for draws, prizing and recognition items is September 30.

About Parkinson Canada

Parkinson Canada is the national voice of Canadians living with Parkinson’s disease. From diagnosis to discovery, since 1965 the organization provides education, advocacy and support services to individuals and health care professionals in communities coast to coast. The National Research Program funds innovative research to search for better treatments and a cure. Parkinson Canada is an accredited organization under the Imagine Canada Standards Program.

To find out more about Parkinson's disease programs and services available near you, contact your local walk coordinator or visit our interactive map at www.parkinson.ca.

What is Parkinson's?
  • More than 100,000 Canadians have Parkinson's disease. That number will double by 2031.
  • Parkinson's is a chronic degenerative brain disorder.
  • When cells in the brain that normally produce a chemical called "dopamine" die, symptoms of Parkinson's appear.
  • Most common symptoms are: tremor (shaking); slowness in movements, muscle stiffness and problems with balance. Other symptoms may also occur such as fatigue, difficulties with speech and writing sleep disorders, depression and changes in thinking ability.
  • Currently there is no cure for Parkinson's disease.

For more information about Parkinson's, click here.

Who gets Parkinson's?
  • More than 100,000 Canadians have Parkinson's disease.
  • Parkinson's affects both men and women across all ethnicities.
  • The majority of those diagnosed are over the age of 65.
  • The average age of diagnosis is 60 years.
  • Parkinson's disease is not a normal part of aging; but the incidence increases with age.
  • Due to the aging baby boom population, the number of people in Canada with Parkinson’s is expected to double by 2031.
  • Almost 20 percent of those diagnosed with Parkinson's are under the age of 50. This is commonly known as "Young-onset Parkinson’s disease”.

For more information about Parkinson's, click here.

How is Parkinson's diagnosed?

Neurologists diagnose Parkinson's by medical history and careful clinical examination. Often, tests are conducted to rule out other conditions, which may resemble Parkinson's.

Why does Parkinson's occur?

The symptoms of Parkinson's appear when there is not enough dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a naturally produced chemical that allows nerve cells to transmit messages between each other and then to muscles to facilitate normal movement. For more information, click here.

Incentives

Does Parkinson Canada pay for incentives?

Yes, Parkinson SuperWalk has a combination of sponsor, in-kind and discount relationships with vendors for its incentives and prizing programs. We are pleased that the relationships we have with these partners help to control the costs of our recognition programs and we are happy to offer incentive prizing to our fundraisers. We offer our participants the opportunity to have more funds directed to support services and research by opting out of the incentive program, which you can do by selecting the box on the paper pledge form, or online in the registration form.

Donations

Where does the money from my donation go?

Parkinson SuperWalk is Canada's largest national fundraiser for Parkinson's. Funds raised through Parkinson SuperWalk go to support education and support services in the communities where the money is raised, as well as research and other national programs like advocacy, a toll-free information and referral line and education for health care professionals. Monies also support the National Research Program toward finding better treatments and a cure for Parkinson's.

Parkinson Canada has strategic plans which guide work in the areas of support services, education and research. As such, funds are attributed to support services and research to meet the strategic directions of the organization. Parkinson Canada is Canada's largest non-governmental funder of Parkinson research in the country. Its peer reviewed scientific research program is one of the most respected in the country. For information on Parkinson Canada's research program please go to www.parkinson.ca.

When and how are receipts issued (online or in the mail)?

Online tax receipts - If you make a donation online you will receive a tax receipt by email within 48 hours of making the donation. If you do not receive your tax receipt please contact your local walk coordinator.

Offline donation - An offline donation is one that you give to a walker they submit it to Parkinson Canada on your behalf, usually on walk day. Since Parkinson SuperWalk does not take place until September, Parkinson Canada does not receive this type of donation until the day of the walk. This donation then has to be processed and verified before a tax receipt is issued. This tax receipt is mailed to the donor at the address provided on the pledge form. Donations for offline receipts are mailed and received no later than the end of February following the Parkinson SuperWalk event.

Walkers who accept cash donations: You go to your fundraising profile page and donate to yourself on behalf of the donor using your own credit card information, and the donor's name and receipt information. When a walker does this, they should keep the cash to cover the amount of the transaction posted on their credit card. In this case, a donor will receive a tax receipt by email within 48 hours of when the donation was processed. See below under "I have received donations and they are in the form of cash and/or cheques - what should I do with them?" for instructions on how to do this.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are paying for the donation by credit card, Parkinson Canada requires full and correct donor information in order to issue an official online tax receipt that meets CRA requirements. If you do not have full information for all mandatory fields indicated with a red asterisk in the donation form, you will not be able to pay for the donation and you will need to hand it in at the registration desk on walk day.

If the donation is processed on walk day, and the donor's complete information is provided at that time, a tax receipt will be mailed to the donor for any donation that exceeds $20. The donation will be added to your offline total.

How much do I have to donate to receive a tax receipt?

Online donations - You will automatically be issued a tax receipt for an online donation of any amount. Tax receipts for online donations are automatically emailed to you from our system within 48 hours. If you made a donation and have not received your receipt, please contact your local walk coordinator.

Offline donations - If you donate $20 or more you will receive a tax receipt in the mail no later than the end of February following the walk.

I want to donate to a walker - should I donate online or in person?

Donating online is always the easiest way to support a walker. When you donate online, your donation will automatically show up on the walker's profile and you will receive a tax receipt by email within 48 hours of the donation. This is also helpful to Parkinson Canada as it reduces costs.

I would like to make a donation, but I do not feel comfortable donating online. What other options do I have?

Please contact your local walk coordinator to make this donation by phone or to get information on where to mail your donation.

I want to put a donation through on my credit card on behalf of one of my donors - how do I do this?

When a donor gives you money (cash or a cheque made out to you), you may process the payment on your credit card (in their name) and then keep the cash/cheque. You can do this by following these steps:

  1. Go to www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca.
  2. Click on "Donate to a Walker"
  3. Find your own profile and go to it.
  4. Click on "Donate Now"
  5. Fill out the donation form using the donor's information under the "Donor Information section and then use your information (as the credit card holder) under the "Billing Information" section.
  6. When the form is complete, click "Process"
I have received donations and they are in the form of cash and/or cheques - what should I do with them?

When dealing with cheques from donors, a walker has two options:

Option 1
You can have the donor write the cheque in your name and then you can go to your fundraising profile page and pay for their donation on your credit card and put the donation under their name. For this you would need their full name, full address, email address and phone number. This will then show up in your thermometer on your profile and it will email the donor a tax receipt automatically. This is the same thing for cash. If you need assistance with this, please contact your local walk coordinator .

Option 2
You can have the donor make the cheque out to Parkinson Canada and submit the cheque on the walk day along with your pledge form.

I added an offline gift, but I want to delete it. How do I do this?
  1. Go to www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca.
  2. Login to your Fundraising Centre at the top of the page.
  3. Under the events you are registered for, click on "Parkinson SuperWalk".
  4. In your Fundraising Centre, click on "Progress".
  5. Scroll down and under the "Donation History" list, find the donation you would like to delete and click on the garbage can icon on the right side of this donation.
  6. A window will pop up to confirm you would like to delete the donation, click "Delete".
I donated to a walker, but I did not get a tax receipt - why?

If you made an online donation and haven't received a tax receipt by email, it may be that the email with the tax receipt has been stopped by your spam filter. Donation receipts online are issued by superwalk@parkinson.ca under the name "Parkinson SuperWalk". Please add this email to you list of approved senders. Check your junk mail folder and if you still have not received please contact your local walk coordinator.

How do I donate to a walker?
  1. Go to www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca.
  2. Click on "Donate to a Walker".
  3. Search the walker's name (you do not have to enter full information, but the more you enter, the better results you will get).
  4. Find the person you would like to donate to and click on their name.
  5. On their profile page, click on "Donate Now".
  6. Fill out all the mandatory fields on the donation form and click "Process".
How do I enter donations online so my thermometer grows and shows my full progress?
  1. Go to www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca.
  2. Login to your Fundraising Centreat the top of the page.
  3. Under the events you are registered for, click on "Parkinson SuperWalk".
  4. On the right-hand side click on the "Enter new gift" button.
  5. Enter all fields that are mandatory.
  6. For "Payment Type", select the type (if you select credit card, then you can pay for the donation on behalf of the donor).
  7. Click "Add" or "Save and Add Another".

PLEASE NOTE: If you have the donation given to you (cheque or cash), you can put it through on your own personal credit card. If you do this, then you will not need to bring that money with you on the walk day as you have paid for it already. If you do not want to put these donations on your credit card, then you need to bring the money with you to your Parkinson SuperWalk event. Any donations that are not received by Parkinson Canada will be considered 'unverified' until received at the walk and tax receipts will be issued manually after the walk.

How do I pull a report of all my online donations to bring to the walk?
  1. Go to www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca.
  2. Login to your Fundraising Centre at the top of the page.
  3. Under the events you are registered for, click on "Parkinson SuperWalk".
  4. Click on "Progress".
  5. Scroll down and click on "Download personal donation list".
  6. Save the file to your computer.
  7. PLEASE NOTE: This will provide you with a report in Excel and will not be setup to print on one page. Please adjust the printer settings before printing it.

Registration

How do I register?

It's easy:
Are you a new online walker? Click here.
Are you returning online walker? Click here.

I would like to register using the same account as last year. How do I do this?

If you were registered for Parkinson SuperWalk in 2015, you will be able to register for 2016 as a returning walker using your username and password from last year. If you can’t remember your username and password, you can get your username and password emailed to you here. Once you have your username and password, you will be able to register for 2016 as a returning walker. For instructions on how to register as a returning walker, click here.

If I register online do I need a pledge sheet too?

You do not need a pledge form if:

  • If you register online and all your donors are online (online donations).
  • If you put the donations through on your credit card and in the donor's name (to feed your thermometer).

You do need a pledge form if:

  • You register online and you have offline pledges, then you can enter them online as unverified (meaning Parkinson Canada has not received the money) and then add them to your pledge form and bring the form and the donations to your walk.
  • You have offline donations and you only want to bring them into the walk with you then you need to put just the offline donations on the pledge form for the walk day.
What do I need to print to bring on the walk day?

What you need to bring with you on the walk day depends on how you collected your donations. Please see below:

Offline Walker - This means that you collected donations that were all offline (cash and cheques that you hand in on the walk day). If you are an offline walker, you will need to bring in your full and completed pledge form and all the cash and cheques that you collected. Please make sure that the total amount of donations equals the total amount of the cash/cheques you bring with you. Also, please make sure that your pledge form is legible and accurate. If a donor's name or address is unclear, we may not be able to issue a tax receipt for their donation.

Online Walker - This means that all the donations you received were made online by credit card. You can print off all the names of your donors when you are logged into your profile. Simply click on the button that says "Click here to print donation report to bring to walk day". There will be a copy of this at the walk, but if you had donations come in at the last minute then the registration desk may have an older version. Once you get to the walk, go to the registration desk and check in.

Online & Offline Walker - This means that you collected some money offline (cash and cheques that you hand in on the walk day) through a pledge sheet and some money collected online (the donor made the donation online with a credit card, and/or you kept track of some of your cash donations through your online profile as unverified online). You will need to bring your pledge form, which should only include the offline donors (donors you did not enter on your online profile). Please do not include your online completed (verified) donations on this pledge form as these have already been tracked online. If you would like, you can bring a separate print out of all your online donors. Your overall fundraising total should be the same as the total of your pledge sheet donations and your online donations (verified and unverified) combined.

What is a virtual walker?

A virtual walker is a registered walker that would like to fundraise for Parkinson SuperWalk but is unable to attend the actual walk. The virtual walker can do their own walk on their own time, or just collect donations to support the walk. Donations collected by virtual walkers go towards the walk they register for. A virtual walker is welcome to register for any Parkinson SuperWalk across Canada (doesn't have to be in their area).

How do I register as a virtual walker?

To register as a virtual walker, you need to do this during the registration process. If you have already registered and did not select "virtual walker" in the process, and wish to change to a virtual walker, please contact your local walk coordinator.

If you have not registered yet, you can register as a virtual walker in the online registration process.

Can I register on the day of Parkinson SuperWalk?

Yes you can. Online registration will be open until the end of September so you can continue to collect online donation until then. You can also register at your walk location on walk day.

I've already registered for Parkinson SuperWalk. When do I receive a registration confirmation?

You should receive a confirmation email right away to the email address that you provided during registration. There's a chance it went into your spam folder (or promotions tab if you use Gmail), so be sure to check there.

If you haven't received a confirmation email yet, please contact your local walk coordinator for assistance.

When I try to register online, I receive error messages and my screen is freezing. What's wrong?

Sorry about that! From time to time, there are so many people accessing the online registration system at the same time that this happens. You didn't do anything wrong. We appreciate your patience and suggest that you try again later.

If you don't want to wait, please contact your local walk coordinator for assistance. When you experience an error, it is always a good idea to take note (copy and paste, or a screen shot work well) of the exact error message and email it to your local walk coordinator for further investigation along with your email and phone number.

I would like to walk with my husband/sister/child/friend. Do I have to register everyone separately?

  1. Go to www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca
  2. Select your region under the drop-down menu for "Find a Walk to Register"
  3. Complete the registration process for yourself.
  4. In step 5 of the registration process, click on "Register Another Walker"

  1. Go to www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca
  2. Login to your Fundraising Centre in the upper left-hand corner.
  3. Once you are logged in (before going to your Fundraising Centre), click on "My Profile".

  6. Click "Done".

My Donors

How do I get a list of my Parkinson SuperWalk donors from previous years?

If you register this year as a returning walker (with the same account as last year), anyone who donated to you last year will be in your current list of contacts for this year. If you would like a donor report from last year, please contact your local walk coordinator.

If my donors give to me each year, do I have to re-enter their information each year?

As long as you re-register for Parkinson SuperWalk 2016 with the same account (same username and password) from 2015, your donors from last year will be saved as contacts in your Fundraising Centre.

I would like to send an email to all my contacts. Is there a limit of how many I can send to at one time?
Yes, there is a limit. The system allows up to 500 contacts to be emailed at one time, as a security control. It is setup this way so it discourages spammers from using our system to send spam emails. If you would like to send to all your contacts, and if you have more than 500 contact emails, you can split your list up and send in blocks of up to 500.

How to create email Groups for use in the Fundraising Centre:

  2. Under the events you are registered for, click on "Parkinson SuperWalk".
  3. Click on “Email”.
  4. On the right-hand side, click on “Contacts”.

  6. Name your group (you may want to name it something like “Email List 1”).
  7. Now back on your contact list, change the number of contacts that display per page (in the bottom right hand corner) to show 500.
  8. Below the list on the left-hand side click on “Select All” (this will just select the 500 contacts showing up).
  9. Above your contact list, click on “Add to Group” and select “Email List 1” (or whatever you labeled it as). This will add the first group of 500 contacts to Email List 1 Group.
  10. Now go to page 2 of your contacts, select them all and add them to “Email List 2”.
  11. Keep creating groups for every block of 500 contacts that your have. If you have 1,000 contacts then you need two groups, if you have 1,500 contacts you need 3 groups, etc. Make sure to label each group so you know the difference. E.g. “Email Group 1” and then “Email Group 2” and so on.
  12. Once you are done adding your contacts to groups, you can then email them.

How to send emails to contact Groups from your Fundraising Centre:
  1. Login to your Fundraising Centre at www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca
  2. Under the events you are registered for, click on "Parkinson SuperWalk".
  3. Click on “Email”.
  4. On the right-hand side, click on “Contacts”.
  5. While in your contact list, click on the “Groups” button just above your contact list.
  6. Select your first group (check of the box beside the group name) and then click on “Compose Message”. This will create an email and add all the contacts in “Email List 1” to the “to” field in the email. Setup the rest of your email and send.
  7. Repeat this for all your other groups and send the email to each group.

Teams

What should I bring with me to the walk?

If you have collected donations with an offline/printable pledge form, you will need to bring the pledge form and the donations with you. For each donation, please ensure that all the donor's information appears neatly and completely on your pledge form. Full name and mailing address are required to issue tax receipts. This data gets entered in the system so that tax receipts can be issued and mailed.

If you have collected donations online, you can print out a summary report of all your online donations and bring it with you. Click here for the instructions on how to pull your summary report.

Where can I find information for the walk I am registered for?

You can visit the Find a Walk page on the Parkinson SuperWalk website and click on your location to get more information. You can also log in to your profile and then scroll down to see your location details.

Are pets allowed at Parkinson SuperWalk?

Most of our walk locations are pet friendly, but some locations do not allow pets due to park/venue restrictions. Please contact your local walk coordinator to find out if your walk location is pet friendly.
