What is SuperWalk: The Movement?

Our new summer campaign is focused on keeping Canadians moving. We all recognize that physical activity so important for Canadians with Parkinson’s, and for all of us. That’s why this summer we’ve set a goal of encouraging 150 minutes of activity per week, following CSEP guidelines for good health.

What that activity looks like will be different for each of you, based on your age, fitness and interests. Just like our overall SuperWalk campaign, your motivations to keep moving may be personal, or they may be about inspiring others to stay moving for their own wellness.

You can participate in a new challenge each month, or you can stick to the activity that you enjoy the most. Just check in with your activities (at least) once a week and take a simple campaign action to earn one entry per week in our monthly prize draws.

Log your minutes exercised in your fundraising centre to track progress toward your goal.

Most of all, the walk has always been about community. While we can't be together in person right now, we can connect, share and inspire others all the same. As you are doing your weekly activities, be sure to tag @ParkinsonSuperWalk.ca on a Facebook post so your picture can scroll on our Social Wall on the main page of SuperWalk.ca.

Sharing Dance

Sharing Dance is a program operated by Canada's National Ballet School (NBS) to celebrate the joy, creativity and community of dance.

Parkinson Canada has been a part of Sharing Dance since it started, and collaborates with (NBS) on a number of dance projects, including the Dancing for Parkinson's Network Canada.

Together, we're sharing the 2020 Sharing Dance Day choreography as part of our plan to keep SuperWalkers active this summer.

Your challenge: get your 150 minutes of weekly exercise through learning the choreography. This choreography, created for NBS by Jera Wolfe, explores how collaboration and support for one another enables us to arise and face challenges in our lives. Watch easy to follow step-by-step videos to learn!

This year's choreography focuses on overcoming obstacles, a theme people with Parkinson's and all of us in this time of COVID-19 can relate to.

To enter this month's draw be sure to complete the weekly exercise challenge at least once. Beyond that, all you need to qualify is to be registered for SuperWalk and have taken raised $50.

One lucky winner will receive a $250 Activewear / Equipment gift card used to keep you moving throughout the summer!

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommends 150 minutes of activity for all Canadians. They've published a set of guidelines for suitable activities for all ages and abilities. We've also shared recorded classes (PWR! Moves; CSEP classes; and Dance) geared at helping you exercise at your own pace.

As part of our Action Plan for COVID-19, Parkinson Canada has compiled a list of resources to support living well with Parkinson's, including print and video exercise resources.

The situation in Canada is changing rapidly, and for many of you, activities have been postponed that you looked forward to in your daily routine such as support groups, exercise, dance classes, boxing, art, and so much more. While we cannot replace these events, we will strive to keep you informed and active.

SuperWalk: The Movement. May Challenge.

Predictive Exercise

A predicted walk essentially is a person predicting or guessing how long it's going to take them to walk a specific distance. For example, the walk around the block in your neighbourhood; or the length of your SuperWalk route (most are 1, 3 or 5km).

Not interested in walking? No problem. This can be adapted to suit a 5km run, a bike ride, or even doing situps or housework. Just set a time goal or estimate and track your activity toward it.

Before you start, write down the time that you think it's going to take you. Let’s say you said five minutes, 55 seconds to walk the block. When you start, turn on a timer walk.

When you get to the start/finish line the time is stopped. Then, calculate the difference between the predicted time and the actual time. The focus is on technique, pace, and most of all just staying active.

Predictive Exercise: Examples

The Predictive Walk idea is an easy, straightforward challenge suitable for anyone. You can vary your distance, and best of all the target time is very personal. Still, we recognize that walking isn't everyone's activity of choice for a number of reasons. The playlist on the left offers a 'how to' for a predictive run and predictive walk. The rest is up to your imagination!

We want our May campaign to be a fit for everyone. A predictive walk / route can be easily adapted for people with mobility issues, and the same holds for those who prefer to run, cycle, or roller blade.

Here are some other ways you can make your own predictive challenge

  • More into calisthenics? How about predicting the number of Pushups you can do in 10 minutes; or how long it will take you to complete Situps or Crunches.
  • Activity comes in all forms, and what matters is getting moving. Maybe your challenge will be completing a certain piece of housework within an estimated time frame.
  • For those familiar with chair exercises, there are many of these that can be adapted to fit a time or quantity goal.
  • Low impact more your thing? Predict how long you can hold a yoga pose or stretch.
  • Or any number of ideas that suit you, your mobility, your interest and your personality.

Whatever you do, what's important is that you're comfortable and active.
