Inspiration comes in many forms. For me, it came as one of my earliest mentors, my elementary school teacher, Mr. Cox.
Peter Cox is a retired teacher from St. Michael's School in Douglas, Ontario, where he taught from 1975 to 1996. He was an excellent teacher, inspiring his students to work hard, be self-disciplined, engage in their local community, take an interest in world events, and above all, to believe in themselves through all of their pursuits - athletic and academic.
However, one of his greatest legacies as a teacher was passing on his enthusiasm for running. His students routinely ran laps from the school and around the church or the 4-mile block around the perimeter of the community. When the weather was cold, students ran laps in the school's gymnasium. Many of his students – myself included - continued running after their Grade 8 graduation and well into their adult life. There are recreational runners, marathoners, and ultramarathoners who credit their passion for running and positive outlook on life to Peter.
Since my early days of doing laps in the gym, running has become an integral part of my life – it’s my favourite way to start my day. It’s challenged me to push myself physically and mentally, and it’s been a safe outlet when I need a break from the world. All of that started because of what Peter shared many years ago.
This is why I’m asking for your support today.
Despite a lifetime of health and activity, in 2015 Peter was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a debilitating brain disorder that impacts balance and coordination.
Although Peter is a very private and humble person, he has given permission to set up the Peter Cox Run for Parkinson’s Canada to honour him and the inspiration he has been to the alumni of St. Michael’s.
By 2031, the number of people living with Parkinson’s in Canada will more than double. Please join me in a running event to fund the increasing need for support services, education, advocacy and research.
Together, let’s help ensure Parkinson Canada can support Canadians living with Parkinson’s today – while funding research into better treatments - and one day, a cure – for tomorrow.
