Peter Cox Run for Parkinson's

The Event:

Virtual Fundraiser for Parkinson Canada in support of Peter Cox.

Peter Cox is a retired teacher from St. Michael's School in Douglas, Ontario, where he taught from 1975 to 1996. He was an excellent teacher, inspiring his students to work hard, be self-disciplined, engage in their local community, take an interest in world events, and above all, to believe in themselves through all of their pursuits - athletic and academic.

As a teacher, one of his greatest legacies was passing on his enthusiasm for running.  His students routinely ran laps from the school and around the church or the 4-mile block around the perimeter of the community.  When the weather was cold, students ran laps in the school's gymnasium. Many of his students continued running after their Grade 8 graduation and well into their adult life. There are recreational runners, marathoners, and ultramarathoners who credit their passion for running and positive outlook on life to Peter.

Despite a lifetime of health and activity, in 2015 Peter was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a debilitating brain disorder that impacts balance and coordination. Exercise has been known to be a wonderful way for people living with Parkinson's to manage their symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

What:

In appreciation of his legacy, let's run, walk, cycle, or snow shoe “virtual” laps from St. Michael’s School and around the Church!

One lap is approximately 400 m in length. For example you could walk 4 km, which is equivalent to 10 “virtual” laps.

When:

Anytime between March 1st and March 31st, 2022 (Peter's birthday).

Where:

Any location of your choosing – Around your neighbourhood, along your favourite trail, on a treadmill, your choice.

By 2031, the number of people living with Parkinson’s in Canada will more than double. Please join me in a running event to fund the increasing need for support services, education, advocacy and research.

Together, let’s help ensure Parkinson Canada can support Canadians living with Parkinson’s today – while funding research into better treatments - and one day, a cure – for tomorrow.
