Hello Friends and Family,
It is normally that time of year for my annual plea for money to fund research aimed at finding a cure for Parkinson’s. Last year I conveyed the message that the annual Pedal for Parkinson’s fund raising ride had run its course and had ended on a high note. The Parry Sound folks had worked incredibly hard over the past 7 years and last year’s ride was the grand finale before riding off into the sunset. It was a fitting end to a wonderful event.
Unfortunately the cure for Parkinson’s remains elusive. There have been numerous advances discovered but sadly no “smoking gun” has been found. The hundreds of thousands of dollars that were raised and distributed to dedicated researchers has produced lots of interesting results but no cure. On the personal side, I felt I needed a year off. However, quickly I was reminded that doing nothing is not a viable solution for me to manage my symptoms. The New Year found me a few pounds heavier, falling with greater frequency and having my vocal abilities diminished.
Then the good news arrived, that contrary to rumors of its demise, Pedal for Parkinson’s has been resurrected. A brave couple, Jim and Krista, from Ottawa have picked up the torch and have revived the ride. I don’t know the new organizers but I very much admire their initiative and courage. The inaugural restarted new ride will be held in Prince Edward County this year from July 12 to 14. Jim has actively communicating what the new Pedaling for Parkinson Canada will look like.
As spring 2019 arrived, I found myself wanting to get on my bike again, I signed up for a Parkinson’s specific spin class and joined a team for this year’s event comprised of PD people. Thus once again, I am asking you to once again join me in this revival year by supporting this endeavor to raise funds for Parkinson’s research. Please don’t feel that you have to match the very generous donations that were pledged in the past. The ride organizers have kept the focus of the funds raised to be ground breaking research and the scope of the ride modest.
It is easier than ever to support this great cause - you can make your donation online by simply clicking on the link at the bottom of this message. If you prefer, you can also send your cheque made out to Parkinson Society Central & Northern Ontario to the dedicated folks at PSCNO at the address listed below.
