Support Paul Kent for Parkinson SuperWalk
It's time for my annual health update and rally for support for this year’s Parkinson Super Walk, which takes place this Saturday at Victoria Park at 11 a.m.
On April 27th, I underwent Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery. In short, the surgery was to implant a device in my brain to better control my tremors, reduce my medication and improve my quality of life.
The 8.5-hour surgery was considered successful, but the aftermath has come with ups and downs. While the device does help my tremors and reduce my medication, it simultaneously causes even greater speech difficulties than I was already experiencing pre-surgery. As such, there is much more fine tuning and tweaking to come, working closely with our healthcare team. Although at times disheartening and frustrating, we remain optimistic that we might soon find the right setting for me. We are so thankful for the continued support of family, friends, and our community.
Living with my condition continues to be a daily struggle for me and my family. Therefore, it is a cause I get behind, without hesitation, every autumn. My goal is raise money to find a cure, so that future generations might see Parkinon's as a disease of the past.

(Background: In 2012 I was diagnosed with a rare Parkinsonian disease called Cortico Basal Ganglionic Degeneration (CBGD). The disease continues to progress, although I'm thankful it's developing somewhat slower than expected.)
