They lived with Parkinson's about 20 years apart, but one thing that was true about both of their experiences was that the support of Parkinson Canada was incredibly important as they navigated life with this disease. Local chapters offered supports, exercise classes and, most importantly, a community of fellow people with Parkinson's (PwP). Donations to Parkinson Canada make those supports possible.
In honour of Stan being the PD Gardener, I will be gardening in is memory on the day of the SuperWalk.
Here is what Stan wrote in 2018 about why the SuperWalk is important:
"If you are a PwP or a family member, you will realize very quickly that no matter how well prepared or how well equipped you are with the latest devices, literature, and aids as a PwP or as a family member, there is still an urgent need for research, support, education, and advocacy for those living with Parkinson’s as its character and course is ever changing. Just when you think you have it figured out, it throws you a curve ball – maybe a new symptom or a change in the severity of an old one.
That is why my team, Team PD Gardener, is participating once again in Parkinson Canada SuperWalk. We know first hand that the over 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson’s and their families (another 400,000) are affected daily by a disease that is so much more than a tremor. The list of symptoms is very long. There is no cure. There is no way to stop its advance. But we cannot give up hope. We cannot give up doing the work that needs to be done to enhance the quality of life for all those
affected by Parkinson’s.
Please support Team PD Gardener in this year’s Parkinson Canada SuperWalk so that we can succeed in our struggle to defeat Parkinson’s."
As an extra incentive to donate, I'll be providing homemade baked goods depending on the amount of the donation:
$25 - a dozen cookies (baker's choice)
$50 - a dozen cookies (donor's choice)
$75 - a loaf cake e.g. banana bread, seasonal fruit loaf, matcha, etc (donor's choice)
$100 - a pan of brownies or blondies (donor's choice)
$150 - a dozen butter tarts
Baked goods will be made in order of donation (ie. donate early and get yours first!)
