Parkinson Canada’s mission is to transform the lives of more than 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson’s by funding critical research, providing information and support, increasing awareness and advocating for improved health care outcomes. The Superwalk is their biggest annual fundraiser.
Please support my SuperWalk . Together, we can make a real difference.
For those who kindly donated last year, watch this to see where your money was spent: https://www.impact.parkinson.ca/
Parkinson's is the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world. By 2031, the number of people living with Parkinson's in Canada will more than double.
In the brain, some of the nerve cells exchange signals through dopamine, a chemical that controls movement. Parkinson's symptoms occur when cells that produce dopamine die. Currently, there is no cure.
Eight years since diagnosis, I am lucky to continue to live well with Parkinson’s and enjoy an excellent quality of life. My progression continues to be relatively slow, which I credit to several major lifestyle adjustments: daily exercise, both those specific to Parkinson’s and other aerobic forms (such as fast walking, trail running, x-country skiing); a predominately Mediterranean/MIND/plant-based anti-inflammatory diet; sleep hygiene to achieve a better sleep quality; stress reduction; and red light/laser therapy. Being socially engaged both in my Parkinson’s community and with family and friends is also extremely beneficial and has been shown to reduce progression rate.
So, if you have friends or family diagnosed with Parkinson’s, please encourage them to remain socially engaged, get involved with local Parkinson’s groups, and move it or lose it! I also recommend this excellent new book as a gift: “Parkinson’s: How to Reduce Symptoms Through Exercise,” by Kristine Meldrum.
Thanks,
Jane
