I am participating in the Parkinson Canada SuperWalk to raise funds for Parkinson Canada, driven by a profound personal connection and a heavy heart. This cause is incredibly close to me because it affects people I deeply care about.
My Mother, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's in her 70s, has faced an incredibly difficult transition. The later-than-average diagnosis has brought immense challenges into her life. She is now more mentally anxious than ever, constantly worried about how people perceive her and what might trigger her tremors when she's out in public. Even a simple breeze of colder air can set off complete body tremors, making her everyday life a struggle.
I also think of my former colleague, Alain Major, who battles this disease daily. Our early morning talks before work gave me a glimpse into the relentless grip of Parkinson's. Alain also referred me to his doctor/clinic, and for that, I am grateful. Seeing Alain's suffering and then witnessing my mother's diagnosis has been heart-wrenching. It has opened my eyes to the devastating impact this disease has not only on those diagnosed but also on their families and friends.
Parkinson's is more than just a statistic—though the numbers are staggering. More than 100,000 Canadians live with Parkinson's, with 30 new diagnoses each day. By 2031, this number will more than double. Parkinson's is the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world, and currently, there is no cure.
The journey of living with Parkinson's is filled with uncertainty and fear, but there is also hope. Your support can make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by this disease. Donations help improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson's and fuel the search for a cure.
I am walking not just for my Mother and Alain, but for every individual and family touched by this relentless disease. It is my hope that, through your generosity, we can bring light into the lives of those battling Parkinson's and move closer to a world where a full, vibrant life is possible for everyone affected.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support.
