On Sunday, September 8th, our family is hoping to walk in the Parkinson Canada SuperWalk to raise money for Parkinson Canada.
Much has changed since we participated in the walk last year. My dad is living with Atypical Parkinsons Disease, which has now progressed to Parkinsons Disease Dementia. As a family, we have experienced many challenging moments this past summer, and it has been very difficult, especially for my mom. There are so many presenting factors to this disease, and each day is a new challenge for us to overcome together. We are grateful to a for offering support by checking in on my mom, keeping my dad company, taking care of my girls and listening to us compassionately when we have our moments of fear. It truly does take a village, and for that, we thank you.
Parkinson's is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world. In the brain, nerves exchange signals through dopamine, a chemical that controls movement. Parkinson's symptoms occur when cells that produce dopamine die. Currently, there is no cure, and the need is only increasing. The support you provide makes a positive impact by improving the quality of life for people living with Parkinson's disease as well as finding a cure.
Parkinson's is a disease that affects not only individuals but also families, friends and care partners who come together to manage the realities of Parkinson's and the associated Parkinsons Disease Dementia. We have experienced this acutely over the last 2 months, as our family has had to come together and make decisions that we never imagined we would have to.
