Hosting Successful Fundraising Events

Looking for an exciting way to raise money for your Lift Lists Challenge? Try hosting a ticketed event like a themed party or show. Use the simple steps below to plan your next fundraiser:

Want to create a poster to promote your event? Download our posters in the fundraisers toolkit.

  1. Choose a theme or format. It’s important to pick the theme first as it will help guide all of your other decisions during the planning process. There are tons of ideas… some examples include: a 1990s dance party, Oscar party, a formal dinner party, screening a new movie in your backyard, or a round robin Scrabble tournament!

  2. Build a budget. When hosting an event is important to remember that there will be expenses incurred. Decide a rough figure for what you are willing to spend, and incorporate that into your fundraising goal so that your expenses are covered. It’s ok to cover expenses from attendance fees as long as you’re up front about it and not buying something for personal benefit. Or, simply count your expenses as your contribution to the cause. Choosing the right vendor is important here, too. Many will negotiate for events hosted for a charity, particularly when you’re bringing paying guests.

  3. Set a fundraising goal. Determine how much money you are hoping to raise from your event. Are you looking to cover your fundraising minimum in one shot or just a percentage? Having a tangible goal will help guide your guest list and pre-event planning.

  4. Pick the perfect location. Whether it is a restaurant, party hall, or your apartment, find the right space to host your friends and family.

  5. Set a date and time. This will be variable based on the venue you choose and its availability. Try and avoid statutory holidays and long weekends as people generally have other stuff going on. As well, be mindful of your guests and their schedules as you want as many people to be able to attend as possible.

  6. Plan the smaller details. Will you be serving food? If so, what kind? Will beverages be available or should guests bring their own? Do you have enough tables and chairs? Asking yourself these questions will help prepare you in gathering materials and supplies.

  7. Invite your guests. Send out a mass email or create an event on Facebook. Let your guests know the theme, date, and time. Most importantly, let them know you are raising money for Life Lists Challenge and why the cause is important to you. Speak to the challenge you have chosen and your excitement towards participating.

  8. Gather materials. Make sure you have everything ready for your event at least one week before your event day. Any tasks you can get done beforehand such as cooking or decorating will help to reduce stress on the day of your fundraiser. Don’t forget to download, or connect with us for Life List Challenge promotional materials, too!

  9. PARTY! Enjoy a fun night with friends and family all the while supporting a great cause.

  10. Send your pictures and stories to Parkinson Canada. We love to hear from you! Your stories are inspiring and we would like to share with other participants looking for new fundraising ideas.

Other great fundraising ideas may include non-ticketed events such as a garage sale or other community based event. And don’t forget about your workplace too!

We’ve already seen a number of fundraisers succeed by hosting their events. Check out some success stories.
